The Power of People: 5 Easy Ways to Recognize and Reward Employees

06.20.2017

Ever wonder what makes a good company great? Some say that it’s efficient processes. Others think it’s groundbreaking solutions. And there are those that believe excellent relationships hold the key.

But the truth is that without a team of skilled and motivated employees, none of those things would even be possible in the first place.

Yet many companies don’t do enough to acknowledge the hard work, creativity, and commitment that top-performing employees bring to the table. That may not seem like a big deal.

But consider this: excellent employees are typically the first to leave. That’s because they have more options. And if they feel unappreciated, they may decide to start refreshing their LinkedIn profiles and resumes sooner rather than later.

Let your employees know you appreciate them with these simple suggestions:

Mind Your P’s and Q’s: A good old-fashioned “thank you” never goes out of style. And sometimes that’s all it takes to boost morale. In the chaos of approaching deadlines and workplace challenges, it’s easy to overlook the power of well-deserved kudos; however, a quick pat on the back can go a long way toward letting your employees know that you value their contributions.

Cut Them Some Slack: Every business has a busy season when things can get a bit hectic. If an employee or department has been putting in extra time and long hours during crunch time, then perhaps it’s a good idea to give them a break when the dust settles. Offering some time off or taking them out for a nice lunch can be a great way to recognize their hard work and help them recharge the batteries.

Give Them Some Press: Many companies have some sort of internal newsletter where they discuss the latest news, events, partnerships, and more. What better place is there to put the spotlight on your top employees and to publicly recognize them for their victories? Writing up a short blurb detailing why they deserve the recognition can also encourage other employees to offer up their congratulations as well.

Reward Them With Gifts: You don’t need to break the piggy bank or blow your budget purchasing lavish and expensive gifts for your team. Instead, small tokens of appreciation can go a long way, especially when they’re thoughtful. Got a movie lover on your team? Give them some free movie passes. Coffee drinker? Go with a Starbucks gift card.

Present an Award: Platinum-selling musicians and movie stars aren’t the only ones who enjoy being recognized for their accomplishments. Offering some type of monthly or quarterly awards is a great way to publicly acknowledge individuals who exemplify your company’s core ideals and go the extra mile to accomplish great things.

Employee recognition may not seem like that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. But taking a little time and effort to show some appreciation can go a long way toward boosting employee morale and keeping them engaged in accomplishing your organization’s long-term goals.
