Summer is upon us. And there’s no better time to step outside and enjoy some fun in the sun. While these warm months may conjure up fond memories of long and lazy days hanging out by the pool with your friends, the reality is that many of us will spend this time busy at work, trying to hit those deadlines and earn a living. But that doesn’t mean that we should let the kids have all the fun.
Wellness challenges, if executed with a little creativity, can provide an excellent excuse—err, opportunity—to step away from the workstation and enjoy the great outdoors.
Stepping outside and enjoying some fresh air is a great way to take a break from the daily grind and unplug for a few minutes. It also provides numerous health benefits. It’s no secret that the sun is one of the best sources of vitamin D, which is essential to maintaining a healthy immune system.
Spending some time outside can also relieve stress, improve mental well-being, and make you feel more focused. When combined with physical activity, spending a little quality time with mother nature can provide a nice physical boost as well.
Here are a few ways to get your employees outside to enjoy the weather and participate in some fun, healthy activities.
Go the Distance: Step challenges, like our Step Ahead Challenge, are almost tailor-made to get participants to go outside. Incorporating a challenge that measures steps or distance is a great way to get your team outside for a few quick laps around the building. In many cases, employees will even start their own walking groups with friends and co-workers to try and work in extra steps.
Schedule a Picnic: Physical activity is only part of the wellness equation; nutrition also plays a major role.
Hosting an outdoor picnic for your department or company can be a great way to get everyone outside for a healthy meal. It can also help them complete challenges like our Brown Bag Challenge, which encourages participants to bring a healthy lunch from home.
Enjoy the Silence: Many companies incorporate challenges that call for participants to take a short break for meditation or relaxation techniques. What better way to get away than to step outside for a bit, where it’s typically quieter and the air is fresher?
Likewise, if you have weekly on-site meditation or yoga classes, perhaps it would be a good idea to move the class outside for a day while the weather is nice.
Conduct 2-Minute Drills: You don’t always need to spend hours in the gym to stay active. Sometimes, all it takes is a few minutes a day to get the blood pumping. Here at Viverae®, we conduct 2-minute drills where employees are encouraged to step away from their workstations for a few minutes of physical activity.
Why not take your next 2-minute drill outside? It could be a great way to help complete a physical activity challenge, like our On the Move Challenge.
The Home Stretch: Spending a little time outside doesn’t have to be strenuous. Stretching challenges, like our Daily Stretch Challenge, can be a relaxing way to improve flexibility and take a much-needed break. But who says you have to do it indoors?
Take your team outside to stretch for a few minutes and enjoy a change of scenery at the same time.
No one likes being cooped up, especially when the weather is nice. This time of year presents a golden opportunity to encourage employees to enjoy some face time with the local flora and fauna while completing some wellness challenges at the same time.
